The Living Daylights Army Series III

The British Army Series III 88-inch soft top of The Living Daylights' pre-title Gibraltar chase (1987) — the munitions truck Bond drops onto through its canvas roof before it goes over the cliff — shown here as the film crew rigged it, with a scaffold camera platform cantilevered over the front wing and a plank clamped along the tub side for the camera team.

The record

The Living Daylights opens with a Double-O training exercise on the Rock of Gibraltar that turns real when an assassin starts killing the agents. Bond (Timothy Dalton, in his first outing) chases the killer, who has taken a British Army Land Rover loaded with explosives, drops from a cliff onto its canvas roof, cuts his way inside and fights him as the vehicle careers down the Rock's roads; the Land Rover goes over the edge and explodes, and Bond escapes by parachute onto a passing yacht. The Land Rover was a Series III 88-inch soft top in deep bronze green with a khaki tilt — the standard British Army light truck of the day, as the story required.

The queue's photograph, from James Bond Lifestyle, shows the vehicle between takes with the camera rig on it: a scaffold platform cantilevered over the left front wing and bumper carrying the camera and its operator, a plank clamped with G-clamps along the left side of the tub for the crew, and yellow ratchet straps holding everything down — the same 88 that appears on screen, dressed for filming rather than for the Army. That is the vehicle modelled here, camera platform and plank included as the queue asked. How many Land Rovers Eon used for the sequence, and what became of them, is not stated in the source.

AI rendering impression

An AI rendering impression starts from a 3D model of this vehicle, which an image model then paints into a scene. It is an artist's impression of the type, made to give a feel for the vehicle in its element — not a photograph, and not a record of any particular vehicle.

Proportions, fittings, markings, colours and the setting can all drift from the original in the process. For the vehicle's actual details, rely on the specification, the photographs and the cited sources on this page.
