Vehicle builders
Firms that built whole Land Rovers rather than bodies for them — under licence, from CKD kits, or as a local derivative that drifted a long way from Solihull. Santana Motor, JRA Limited and Short Brothers ran production lines, not conversion shops, which is why a handful of firms here account for 119 of the registry's vehicles.

Bodywork
Coachbuilders and conversion specialists that built ambulance, fire appliance, motor caravan and command-post bodies on the Land Rover chassis cab or hard top. Several were building horse-drawn bodies before the Land Rover existed: Martin Walter Ltd from 1773, Tickford Ltd from 1820, Carmichael & Sons from 1849 and Penman Engineering from 1859.

Armourers, defence contractors and engineering consultancies rather than bodyshops: firms that added ballistic or composite plate, re-engineered a chassis for a military order, or fitted the equipment that gave a working Land Rover its job — the armour of the Shorland and the Snatch, the WMIK weapons mount, the remotely driven Panama, the breakdown-truck crane.

Workshops
Vehicles built by the people who operated them. Police, army and utility workshops rebuilt, armoured and reconfigured Land Rovers in-house — the Royal Ulster Constabulary designed and built its own armoured cars at Seapark, and the Post Office fitted out its own field fleet — and the restorers and restomod builders at the end of the list are doing the same job in reverse.
