History

The Land Rover was introduced by the Rover Company in 1948 with a centre power take-off driven from the transfer box, a rear power take-off to agricultural standard and a flat-belt pulley, so that the vehicle could drive stationary machinery as a tractor did. Rover's sales literature and, from the 1950s, its approved-equipment booklets listed implements from other makers that fitted these drives. The rear PTO and centre PTO remained on the options list until 1985.

Winches were made to the same drives by Aeroparts Engineering of Hereford, whose capstan winch the Rover Company sold from 1950, and by Mayflower Automotive Products of Tavistock, which became Fairey Winches in the 1970s and Superwinch in the 1980s and also made the overdrive and freewheeling hubs. Compressors (Bullows, Broom & Wade, Atlas Copco), welding generators (Lincoln Electric), pumps (Autometric, Coventry Climax), mowers (Hayter), shearing sets (Lister), sprayers (Evers & Wall) and spreaders (Salopian) were sold as approved equipment through Rover dealers.

Military equipment was procured to published specifications with FV numbers, NATO stock numbers and user handbooks. The British Army's trailers were built by Brockhouse and then GKN Sankey (the ½-ton and ¾-ton general-service trailers) and, from 2004, Penman Engineering of Dumfries; radio-fitted vehicles carried the 24-volt FFR kit and later the Clansman and Bowman installation kits; and from the 1970s armour kits (the GRP and steel Vehicle Protection Kits, Hotspur, NP Aerospace composite) and the Ricardo Weapons Mount Installation Kit (1998–2011) were fitted to Series III, One Ten and Wolf vehicles. Australian Army equipment for the Series and Perentie followed the same pattern.

Electric and hydraulic winches replaced power-take-off drives from the 1980s, and the coil-sprung Ninety and One Ten of 1983–84 were not provided for a capstan winch. Aftermarket equipment for expedition and overland use — roof racks (Brownchurch from 1970, Safety Devices), roof tents (Eezi-Awn from 1983), raised air intakes (Safari from 1981, Mantec), locking differentials (ARB, Ashcroft), auxiliary fuel tanks, and tyres and wheels marketed for the Defender — makes up most of the equipment still in production.
