Fairey / Superwinch mechanical drum winch (Land Rover kit 6920)

Mayflower Automotive Products, Fairey Winches, Superwinch · United Kingdom · 1965–1990

Worm-and-wheel drum winch bolted to the front bumper and chassis dumb-irons, driven by a shaft from the Series 299 chain PTO on the transfer box, so it winds under engine power with the vehicle gearbox setting speed and direction. A lever on the winch disengages the drum for free-spooling, a shear pin protects the drive, and the maker's running-in and snatch-block advice came in Land Rover's own 19-page fitting manual; descended from the Mayflower Mk3 drum winch approved in the 1960s.
