Land Rover Defender

The coil-sprung One Ten, Ninety and 127 of 1983–85, badged Defender from 1990 and built at Solihull until 29 January 2016: Camel Trophy and G4 cars, the Army's Wolf and Snatch, the NAS exports and the expedition wagons.

Land Rover's answer to the Japanese four-wheel drives of the 1970s was not a new body but a new chassis. Under a Series III-shaped shell the One Ten of 1983 carried the Range Rover's coil springs, permanent four-wheel drive and disc front brakes, on a 110-inch wheelbase; the Ninety followed in 1984 on a wheelbase that actually measured 92.9 inches, and the 127-inch crew cab in 1985. When the Discovery arrived in 1989 the utility range needed a name of its own, and from the 1991 model year the One Ten, Ninety and 127 became the Defender 110, 90 and 130.

What changed after that was almost entirely under the bonnet: the 200Tdi of 1990, the 300Tdi of 1994, the five-cylinder Td5 of 1998 and the Ford 'Puma' TDCi engines of 2007 and 2012. The body, the aluminium panels and the ladder chassis stayed close to the 1983 drawing until the last Solihull-built Defender, a 90 Heritage soft top registered H166 HUE, left the line on 29 January 2016. This page follows the coil-sprung line through the registry's records — from a 1984 St John ambulance to the Camel Trophy Ninetys, the MoD's Wolf and WMIK, the North American 110s and the Royal Geographical Society's bursary wagons — and leaves the monocoque L663 Defender of 2020 to a single sentence at the end.

Coil-sprung development and the One Ten, Ninety and 127 (1976–1985)

6 VEHICLES IN THIS CHAPTER

The coil-sprung Land Rover was on the drawing board long before it was on sale. The Dunsfold Collection keeps one of a batch of four 110-inch prototypes built in 1976 on a Range Rover chassis stretched ten inches, with Range Rover axles and a modified Series III 109 body — assembled before the 109 V8 itself was launched. Around twenty-five pre-production 110s followed in 1980, HAC 404V among them, with handmade inner wings, a five-speed gearbox and no heater. The production One Ten was shown to the British press at Eastnor Castle in February 1983 and to the world at Geneva in March, replacing the Series III 109 with permanent four-wheel drive, a one-piece windscreen and wind-up windows. The short car was harder: the eleven Final Engineering Prototype Ninetys of 1982–83 tried a true 90-inch wheelbase on the first car and 92.9 inches on the other ten, and the longer figure went into production in 1984 under the shorter name. The 2.5-litre diesel replaced the 2.25 in January 1984, Land Rover's own timeline dates the 2.5 petrol and the V8 option to 1985, and the 127-inch crew cab and chassis cab joined the range the same year.

The registry's earliest coil-sprung records are working vehicles. St John Ambulance's One Ten B183 LBJ is a 1984–85 box-body ambulance, Cumbria Constabulary's C931 MHH a mid-1980s police station wagon, and the Ministry of Defence Police Special Escort Group's fleet number 3262 an armoured V8 110 delivered early in 1985. The SAS took the One Ten too: from 1985 Glover Webb built the V8 Desert Patrol Vehicle on the High Capacity Pick-Up that replaced the Series IIA Pink Panther, and Hotspur stretched a One Ten chassis to make the six-wheeled Hussar armoured carrier in 1984. The first Camel Trophy in the new car was the 1984 Brazil event, run in Sandglow One Ten station wagons a year after the Series IIIs of Zaire.

Camel Trophy Ninetys and the Diesel Turbo (1985–1989)

7 VEHICLES IN THIS CHAPTER

The Ninety's first public work was the Camel Trophy. Land Rover Special Vehicles prepared Sandglow Ninetys with roll cages, winches, snorkels and roof racks for Borneo in 1985 — the registry follows the Italy 1 car of Flavio Dematteis and Stefano Gasi — and again for Australia in 1986, with One Tens as support cars; the cars were generally used for one event only. After a Range Rover year in Madagascar the event went back to the One Ten for Sulawesi in 1988 and the Amazon in 1989, by then with the 2.5 Diesel Turbo launched in September 1986 with 85 bhp. The V8 was lifted to 134 bhp the same year, and in 1989 the 3.5 V8 and 127-inch chassis together made the Land Rover Special Projects Rapier detachment vehicle that took over the air-defence job from the 101 Forward Control.

The armoured trade found the chassis at once. The Royal Ulster Constabulary's own engineers built the Tangi on the One Ten from 1986, and Shorts continued its Series 5 Shorland armoured cars on the coil-sprung chassis. In Turkey Otokar began licence assembly in 1987, producing soft-top patrol 90s and the 106 mm recoilless-rifle gun buggy for the Turkish Army. The British Army Motoring Association's Ninety 64 KF 64 — an ex-MoD 1986 car later rallied as Romeo Four — stands for the plain Ninety and One Ten hard tops the MoD bought in 1985–87, which ABRO would refurbish twenty years later under Project Tithonus.

The Defender name and the Tdi engines (1990–1997)

9 VEHICLES IN THIS CHAPTER

The Discovery of 1989 forced the question of what the utility Land Rover was called. For the 1991 model year the range became Defender 90, 110 and 130 — the 130 keeping its 127-inch wheelbase, the number simply rounded up — and got the engine that changed its character: the 200Tdi, a 2,495 cc direct-injection intercooled turbodiesel of 107 bhp developed for the Discovery. The quieter 300Tdi of 111 bhp replaced it in 1994. The Defender went to war in the meantime: the registry's Operation GRANBY records include KILCAR, the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars' REME One Ten soft top, and an RAF Mobile Air Operations Team One Ten hard top at 4th Armoured Brigade's forward headquarters in January 1991.

Two export programmes bracket the decade. In 1992 Land Rover Special Vehicles built the Special Operations Vehicle for the US 75th Ranger Regiment, and in 1993 sent 525 Alpine White Defender 110 County station wagons — 500 to the United States and 25 to Canada — heavily modified for North American rules; the NAS Defender 90 followed with the 3.9 V8 from 1994 and, for 1997, the 4.0 V8 and an automatic gearbox. In Britain NP Aerospace's CAV 100 composite-armoured Snatch entered service in 1992, and in 1994 the Ministry of Defence chose a strengthened Defender, tested as the Wolf and sold commercially as the XD, for a contract of about £170 million and some 8,000 vehicles: the 300Tdi Truck Utility Light and Medium HS of 1996, with a bespoke chassis, reinforced Salisbury axles and the Marshall-bodied Pulse ambulance on the 130 chassis. Two of the Wolf-specification 110s prepared for Sir Ranulph Fiennes' cancelled global expedition survive in the registry, one on Mattracks and one repainted gold as the Fifty 50 Challenge support car; the Camel Trophy meanwhile used Defender 110 Tdis as support vehicles behind the Discoverys from 1990 to 1998. The decade closed with a Defender 90 hard top hauled to the summit of Elbrus in 1997.

Td5, WMIK and the G4 Challenge (1998–2006)

9 VEHICLES IN THIS CHAPTER

In December 1998 the 122 bhp five-cylinder Td5, electronically managed, became the Defender's standard engine; electronic traction control followed in 2000. The Wolf grew teeth in the same years. Ricardo and Land Rover began the Weapons Mount Installation Kit in 1997 and the first production WMIKs — open-topped TUM HS fire-support cars with a ring-mounted heavy weapon — reached the Army in 2002, going to Iraq with the Queen's Royal Lancers and to Afghanistan; the registry carries the Royal Marines Brigade Patrol Troop car, the Pathfinders' cutaway Defender 90 LRPV and the SBS's plain white XD 110 of Mazar-i-Sharif in 2001. Land Rover Special Vehicles also built three 110 High Capacity Pick-Ups as Lara Croft's expedition truck for Tomb Raider in 2000, one of which is at the British Motor Museum, and three Td5 'Taurus' armoured station wagons from CKD kits in South Africa the same year.

The Camel Trophy ended in 2000 and Land Rover replaced it in 2003 with its own G4 Challenge, run in Tangiers Orange Td5 County station wagons, and repeated it in 2006. Private expeditions kept the long wagon's reputation: Kingsley Holgate's Capricorn journey of 2001–02 and a Defender 90's European altitude record on the Gobba di Rollin in 2000. At home the 110 and 130 became the default mountain rescue ambulance and fire brigade special: Cleveland Fire Brigade's 2005 Defender 130 Line Rescue unit and the North Dartmoor team's 110 ambulances are typical of hundreds.

Puma engines, bursary vehicles and the end of production (2007–2016)

9 VEHICLES IN THIS CHAPTER

The 2007 model year brought the biggest change to the cab since 1983: Ford's 2.4-litre Duratorq TDCi 'Puma' diesel of 122 bhp and 265 lb ft, a six-speed gearbox, a full-width fascia, and forward-facing rear seats in place of the inward-facing benches that new seating law had outlawed. A 2.2-litre version of the same engine met Euro 5 from the 2012 model year. The Army's Defenders were meanwhile rebuilt for Iraq and Afghanistan — the Enhanced WMIK with its MAPIK armour kit in 2006, the Re-lifed R-WMIK with an armoured V-hull in 2008, the Snatch 2 Vixen Plus — while Project Tithonus put 1985–87 Ninety and One Ten hard tops through ABRO for another decade of service. OVIK's Pangolin (2011) and Penman's Armoured Land Rover Mk.4 (2012) kept the Northern Ireland tradition alive on the Puma chassis.

Expedition Defenders of the period are well represented. Steve Burgess's amphibious 110 YK07 DTA became the first road vehicle to swim the Bering Strait on 8 August 2008; Lottie carried the 2010 Fault Line Living team; a 110 station wagon went to the Pole of Cold in the winter of 2013–14; and the Royal Geographical Society's Land Rover bursary put an XS station wagon under Trail by Fire along the Andean volcanoes in 2015 and another under the Transcaucasian Expedition of 2016. Special Operations built ten 'Bigfoot' 110 double cabs with Bowler for Spectre and a one-off 90 with Sir Paul Smith in 2015, and in May 2015 a team including Bear Grylls, Virginia McKenna and the Wilks founders' sons assembled Defender 2,000,000, a 90 station wagon (S90 HUE, chassis SALLDWBP7FA473395) that Bonhams sold for £400,000 on 16 December 2015 for the Red Cross and the Born Free Foundation. The run-out Heritage, Adventure and Autobiography editions came to about 2,654, 2,277 and 180 cars on LR Workshop's VIN count, and on 29 January 2016 the 2,016,933rd Series or Defender vehicle, a Heritage 90 soft top registered H166 HUE, left the Solihull line in front of more than 700 current and former employees.

Production stopped but the chassis did not. Land Rover Classic's Works V8 of 2018 rebuilt 150 late Defenders with the 5.0-litre 405 bhp Jaguar V8, and the same workshop's ten-car DAKTARI (2024) and Churchill (2025) editions are the latest registry records of the line. Foley built a Defender 130 gun bus for Sandringham in 2016, Bowler's Pennine V6 110 prototype of 2015 put a supercharged Jaguar engine in a crew-cab chassis, and the two DefenderX 110s, Princess and The Mother Ship, set out to drive and swim from London to New York in 2022 on bolt-on pontoons. A Defender also shadowed the Series I Oxford on The Last Overland of 2019. Ex-Wolf and Snatch vehicles pass steadily to the police forces, rescue teams and collectors whose records fill the rest of this page, and the Australian Army's own licence-built 110 is told on the Perentie page.

The Defender name returned on 10 September 2019 at Frankfurt on the aluminium-monocoque L663, on sale from 2020; it shares nothing with the 1983 chassis and is outside this registry.
